WJC Declaration for Israel’s 70th Birthday

The World Jewish Congress in Jerusalm Tuesday presented Israel’s president Reuven Rivlin their official “Declaration of the Jewish Diaspora’s Commitment to the State of Israel on the Occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the State of Israel.”

Lithuanian Jewish Community chairwoman Faina Kukliansky is a signatory to the declaration signed by 83 Jewish community leaders around the world.

The WJC initiated this unprecedented declaration in the name of Jewish communities on six continents as a Jewish Diaspora manifesto motivated by the “immense pride and admiration for Israel’s remarkable and inspiring achievements over the course of the past seven decades, and mindful of our enduring commitment to its wellbeing, security and rights among the nations,” declaring “our steadfast and unwavering support for Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people and its centrality to the Jewish people…”

WJC CEO Ronald Lauder said his organization, representing 100 Jewish communities on six continents, is firmly pledged to support Israel and the country’s people. He called the manifesto a declaration of their promise to continue to defend and encourage the Jewish state, to help to insure a wonderful and safe future for the country.

This declaration was modeled upon Israel’s declaration of independence, which president Rivlin showed to the WJC delegation which included WJC general director Robert Singer, representatives of the WJC’s main programs, the WJC’s diplomatic corps and future Jewish community leaders from around the world.

Upon accepting the declaration, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said: “At the root of our relationship as the Jewish people there is one simple, absolute understanding that must prevail: our mutual responsibility for one another; our commitment to the security, liberty, and welfare of every member of our people. This commitment must be stronger than any disagreement. We have the challenge of cementing the ties between us as a value that stands beyond any debate. Our relationship must always stand at the heart of Jewish existence, a mission that is part of the State of Israel’s commitment to the Jewish people. I am pleased to accept this moving declaration, a simple proof of this mutual responsibility that we must never forgo.”
